Our Review Methodology

Current methodology: review-analysis based, not first-hand product testing. We do not currently buy and physically test the products we cover. Every claim in our reviews is grounded in one of these sources, cited inline with a link:

Manufacturer-published specifications: coverage area, pressure ratings, warranty terms, and certifications, verified against the brand's own product pages rather than assumed or estimated.

Independent certifications and standards bodies: for smart controllers specifically, we rely on EPA WaterSense certification status and EPA's own published water-savings study data, rather than asserting a savings percentage ourselves.

Analysis of verified buyer reviews: recurring themes (both praise and complaints) drawn from Amazon, Home Depot, and other retailer review pages — looking for patterns across many reviews, not cherry-picked quotes.

Third-party professional reviews: where a reputable outlet (e.g. Wirecutter, PCMag, established irrigation trade publications) has published its own testing or analysis, we cite it directly rather than restating it as our own finding.

We're transparent about this limitation: review-analysis is not a substitute for hands-on testing, and we say so on every review page. Moving to first-hand testing for our highest-traffic reviews is something we're actively considering as the site grows.

Verified Review Analysis

Where we cite buyer-review sentiment (e.g. "a recurring complaint" or "owners consistently praise"), this reflects patterns we identified across multiple verified-purchase reviews on retailer sites — not a single quote taken out of context, and not an invented statistic. We do not use star-rating averages as our primary signal; we look at what reviews actually describe, and we link to the source listing wherever a specific claim depends on it.
